The Australians have had their first taste of gold today with the women's 4x100m freestyle relay team pulling out all the stops to snatch victory from the Dutch.

Stephanie Rice did not have nearly as much luck, failing to place in her 400m individual medley while former superstar Michael Phelps came fourth in his medley against teammate Ryan Lochte, who won with ease.

Away from the poolside, the women's basketball team beat Great Britain, boxer Ibrahim Balla scraped through his opening round and the women's beach volleyball team lost their first round game to the US.
