It is said that pentathlon had its origins in the 19th century when a French cavalry officer was sent to deliver a message and had to ride, fence, shoot, swim and run to complete his mission.
The sport celebrates 100 years as part of the Olympics in London, where the run and shoot will be combined for the first time. Australia has never won a medal in modern pentathlon.
