Aussie athletes: Aiming to send two male and two female pairs

There won't be a beach in sight when the Olympic spotlight turns to beach volleyball in London, one of the Games' most popular sports since its introduction in 1996. Instead, 3000 tonnes of sand will be trucked in to form a temporary playing arena at the historic Horse Guard's Parade, a stone's throw from Trafalgar Square.

Australia's big hopes lie with Natalie Cook, who is the first female Australian athlete to compete at five summer Games, and Tamsin Hinchley (nee Barnett). The pair competed together in Beijing, finishing fifth.

Cook and Hinchley finished fifth overall at the Beijing Olympics. Cook, who is an Olympic gold and bronze medallist, is driven to make her record-breaking fifth Games and will no doubt be chasing a medal for her Olympic swansong.

Palmer and Bawden are Australia's No1 beach volleyball team. The reigning national champions have been impressive on the World Tour since pairing in 2009. Sitting at No15 on the Olympic rankings list, they'll be among the favourites to secure a medal at their first Games as a duo.
