Thousands of mourners, across Victoria and South Australia, have farewelled Port Adelaide player John McCarthy, who died during an end-of-season trip to Las Vegas.

Players from Port Adelaide and his former club Collingwood attended McCarthy's funeral in his hometown of Sorrento, on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula. Mourners at the headquarters of his former clubs also watched the service via a special live link.

McCarthy’s mother spoke at the funeral, describing her son as an extraordinary man who loved his family and his teammates.
