Melbourne Cup-winning jockey Corey Brown has capped off his best week in racing and salvaged a Group One victory for trainer David Hayes with an upset win on All American in the Emirates Stakes at Flemington.

After winning the Victoria Derby on Monaco Consul and the Cup on Shocking, Brown couldn't believe his luck when All American ($41) burst from the pack and stormed past Cox Plate-winning three-year-old So You Think ($3.90 fav) to win by 2-1/2 lengths.

"I would have been happy after the Derby just to go home with that, but then to win the Melbourne Cup and now the Emirates is just super," Brown said.

Bart Cummings queried Glen Boss' riding tactics on So You Think who tried to lead all the way as he did in the Cox Plate.

"If he was ridden just off the pace he would have been better off," Cummings said.

"I told him to sit fourth or fifth with cover."

Boss said So You Think raced fresh and he had no option but to lead when he began so well and he couldn't get cover.

Hayes has had a controversial carnival with the drama surrounding the scratching of Changingoftheguard from the Melbourne Cup and he has struggled to make an impact over the four days, with Eagle Falls his only other winner in the Group Two Salinger Stakes on Derby Day.

Hayes welcomed his change of fortune with All American who, after going 20 months without a win, rose to the occasion when it counted with a winning time of 1:33.98 thanks to So You Think's strong frontrunning performance.

"He has been knocking on the door all spring but today he got the runs he has been trying to get," Hayes said.

"This was the biggest race he has been in for a while and if you break 1:34 at Flemington you are a pretty smart horse."

Brown said All American responded like a top galloper when he was able to get into the clear after again having problems in the run.

"This horse's life story has been nothing but trouble," Brown said.

"He is always in trouble in races and it was much the same today.

"Coming down towards the half-mile (800m) he was all over their backs and doing silly things.

"He wasn't happy in the run but he got the luck early on in the straight, dived through and hit the line really well."

So You Think looked set for an easy win but his gut-busting effort in front took its toll while Gold Salute ($8) stormed home to finish third, a neck behind him.

All American's last win was as a two-year-old in the Skyline Stakes after finishing second to stablemate Reaan in the Blue Diamond Stakes.

Hayes said All American's Emirates Stakes success set him up as a stallion when he retires to stud.

"This is the proper race to win with a stallion prospect and that's part of the game, I really enjoy these days, producing stallions," Hayes said.

He said Perth's Group One Railway Stakes (1600m) now looked an ideal follow-up for All American before the end of the year.

Meanwhile, Cummings said So You Think would be spelled and prepared for the autumn where the Australian Cup and the AJC Australian Derby are on his short-list of things to do.
