Guehrer maintains fine form in Moscow
14:36 AEST Sat Nov 7 2009

Australia's Marieke Guehrer continued her outstanding 2009 form setting a new world record for the 50m backstroke at the FINA Swimming World Cup in Moscow on Friday with a time of 26.17secs as well and taking out the 50m freestyle in 23.92.

In bettering the previous time (26.23) set by Croatia's Sanja Jovanovic in December 2008, the 23-year-old from Melbourne held off strong competition from Brazilian Fabiola Molina and Hinkelien Schreuder from the Netherlands.

But it was the 50m freestyle was where last year's overall World Cup series winner surprised most, having qualified swimming in lane eight, Guehrer defeated her much-fancied rivals in Schreuder, and third-placed Swedish star Therese Alshammar.

Australian teammate Felicity Galvez also had reason to celebrate breaking the women's 100m butterfly World Cup record of 56.12, stopping the clock at 55.82.

Alshammar finished second with Jeanette Ottensen placing third.

At her first major international meet since the Beijing Olympics, Leisel Jones finished third in the 100m breaststroke (1:04.61) with rival Jessica Hardy of the USA winning the event in a time of 1:03.75, just 0.03 outside Jones own world record.

Qualifying fastest for the race, Jones was less than a second off her personal best time for the 100m (1:03.72).

Ashley Delaney, Australia's only male representative in Moscow swam a personal best time of 50.55 in the mens 100m backstroke final, however this was not enough for a podium finish, as he finished fourth behind Peter Marshall of the USA.
