North not fussed by Test speculation

Western Australian captain Marcus North says playing guessing games with Test selectors isn't for him.

The rumour mill has been alive with speculation all-rounder Shane Watson could be slotted back from opener to No.6 for the first Test against the West Indies in Brisbane on November 26, with Phillip Hughes winning back his Test spot at the top of the order.

The 20-year-old Hughes failed to grab his chance in this week's drawn Sheffield Shield match against the Warriors at the SCG, scoring 32 in the NSW first-innings total of 402 in reply to Western Australia's 8-499 declared.

North himself made 34 but with a Shield average this season of 70.50, the 30-year-old isn't doing much wrong.

The Warriors skipper also picked up 4-82 off 33.1 overs against NSW with his off-spinners to remind national selectors of his worth.

"I've never looked too far ahead in the short career I've had for Australia," said North, who has scored three centuries in his seven Tests including two hundreds in the 2009 Ashes series.

"I've come back and I've got the opportunity to play three Shield games for Western Australia.

"My objective is to get us off to a good start as much as getting some runs myself.

"I'm going to do everything to put my name up again for selection for the West Indies and hopefully I get that nod.

"If so I'll be doing as much as I can to win Test matches for Australia and making as many runs as I can and hopefully the selectors won't be able to find an excuse to omit me from the team."

North is facing some pressure to hold his spot following Australian chairman of selectors Andrew Hilditch's recent comments about the need for Watson to be prepared to bat anywhere in the top six.

This could leave North out in the cold for the Brisbane Test, although doubts over Test vice-captain Michael Clarke's fitness may mean he's the one to be rested with North, Watson and Hughes all included for the first Test.

"There's no point me guessing what the selectors are going to do. I've just got to try to make as many runs as I can," North added on Friday.

"Hopefully I've done enough in the seven Tests that I've played to stay in the team."
