OneAsia to expand in 2010
19:41 AEST Fri Nov 6 2009

The controversial OneAsia golf tour is proving true to its word, announcing on Friday significant expansion for the second season of the breakaway tour in 2010.

Having held five tournaments this year in its first season, the OneAsia Tour will field 11 events in 2010, including two in Australia, four in China, two in Korea and one in Thailand.

Thailand will host an event for the first time and all tournaments will have a minimum purse of $US1 million ($A1.1 million).

Nine events have been revealed, including the Australian Open and Australian PGA Championship, the China Open and the Korea Open, with two more to be announced before the end of the year.

The tour has met stern opposition from the dominant Asian Tour, who have threatened to ban or fine their members who contest OneAsia events.

But OneAsia is determined to eventual reach similar levels to that enjoyed by the US PGA and European Tours.

"We are delighted to support our partners to help raise the bar and boost the game across the region," said Ben Sellenger, commissioner of the Australasian PGA Tour.

"There's a vast wealth of both experienced and untapped talent across Asia and by raising the profile and standards of tournament golf we are set to inspire the next generation of golf stars and provide them with an alternative career to the US and European Tours at home."

The tour is set to expand further to a minimum of 15 events from 2011.

The Luxe Hills Championship in Chengdu, China will kick-start the season on March 25, concluding with the Australian PGA on December 9.

"OneAsia is providing a higher level of playing opportunities for golfers in the region by increasing the level of competition and boosting prize money for players to build a professional career at home," said Zhang Xiaoning, OneAsia chairman and secretary general of the China Golf Association.

"The level of interest in this year's schedule has been overwhelming."
