Blues unsure of Shield selection

NSW captain Simon Katich says he has "no idea" what sort of side the Blues will put together for their next Sheffield Shield clash with Tasmania, with doubts remaining over the fitness of several players including Michael Clarke.

Australia vice-captain Clarke, who skipped the current one-day tour of India with a back problem, was unavailable for the Blues' opening Shield game of the season which ended in a draw at the SCG on Friday.

Western Australia claimed their first points of the season by bowling NSW out for 402 after tea on the final day in reply to the visiting side's 8-499 in a match marred by rain interruptions.

Stumps were taken at 5.44pm with the Warriors 2-24 in their second innings.

Warriors opener Wes Robinson was named man of the match for his first-innings 141.

Ex-Queensland quick Ashley Noffke (4-105) and spinner Marcus North (4-82) combined to shut down NSW's hopes of first-innings points.

Katich top-scored for the Blues with 108 while 20-year-old leg-spinner Steven Smith was out for 90, his highest first-class score.

The result leaves the Warriors with two points from two Shield matches this season.

NSW will host Tasmania at the SCG on November 17, in a match that could be vital for players such as Clarke and paceman Brett Lee (elbow injury) to prove their fitness before Australia's first Test against the West Indies in Brisbane on November 26.

"I've really got no idea. I honestly don't know what the scenario will be with the Australian players coming back," Katich said on Friday.

"I don't have any idea about what's going on with Pup (Clarke). We'll really just wait and see because our next game is Sunday week which is a one-day game (November 15 at North Sydney Oval against Tasmania) and I don't think the one-day guys (from the Australian squad) are back for that."

The Blues lost paceman Burt Cockley mid-match after the 23-year-old was sent to India as Australia's injury toll continues to mount. However it was Noffke, the former Australia one-day and Twenty20 representative, who made a strong case for a national call-up.

Noffke took the prize wickets of Test batsmen Katich, Brad Haddin (4) and Phillip Hughes (32) and also trapped former Test spinner Beau Casson lbw (8).

"In these conditions where it can be a little bit tough for the quicks he showed great character and experience and really led the bowling attack with some aggressive bowling on a typical SCG wicket which didn't offer a lot for the quicks," Warriors skipper North said.

"He got enough out of it and did well to pick up four very important wickets.

"If he did get called up, he wouldn't let anyone down that's for sure."
