Nannes blow has Vics calling on depth

Dirk Nannes' hamstring injury means Victoria must draw on their bowling reserves for the home block of their domestic season, which starts with Saturday's one-day game against Tasmania at the MCG.

Like Australia, Victoria have a string of bowlers unavailable, as Nannes and Damien Wright are injured, Clint McKay, Andrew McDonald and Cameron White are on national duty and Peter Siddle's mammoth stint overseas was ended by a sore side muscle.

Coach Greg Shipperd said Nannes was nursing an inflamed tendon in the lower part of his hamstring, which could sideline the paceman for up to a month and keep him out of two Sheffield Shield matches and three one-dayers.

Wright's hamstring injury and the recent departures of McKay and McDonald to India meant the Bushrangers called on two younger players to round out the squad for the clash with the Tigers.

Batsman Michael Hill and offspinning allrounder Glenn Maxwell, both 21, are vying for a game on Saturday, when the Vics will have to conjure at least 10 overs from part-timers given there are only four specialist bowlers in the squad of 12.

"We are limited with our bowling but we still think we can give an excellent account of ourselves," Shipperd said on Friday.

"(Having players on national duty) is something we've looked forward to for a long time now and our response to that is blooding new players or players who have been waiting for opportunities.

"Our depth is tested but something positive will come out of it."

One bowler to have seen the positive in a lengthy list of absentees is paceman Darren Pattinson, who was an onlooker for a large chunk of last season but claimed 3-34 in Wednesday's one-day win over South Australia.

Pattinson said he was raring to go physically after feeling the benefits of a reduced workload for English county side Nottinghamshire.

"It feels great, I did a lot of work in England the last month I was there and I've come back pretty fresh and fit," said Pattinson, whose younger brother James is also sidelined, because of a broken finger.

"Last year I didn't get right until after Christmas, I came back with a groin injury and I'd bowled a lot of overs in England.

"I wasn't bowling as much this year and really looking after myself this year, so it means a lot to come back and to get straight back into it."

Tasmania have a win and a loss from two matches, but kept the same squad from their last one-dayer, a 24-run defeat to Queensland on October 30.

Fine and sunny conditions are forecast for Saturday's game, which is scheduled to start at 2.15pm (AEDT).
