McConville quits V8 Supercars

V8 Supercar driver Cameron McConville - who is retiring - says the sport needs more stability.

He survived the most frightening crash in V8 Supercars this year but it was a far more conventional shunt that convinced Bathurst runner-up Cameron McConville it was time to quit.

The popular Holden driver will be remembered for hurtling out-of-control across Phillip Island's grass, gravel traps and tarmac at 280km/h during September's enduro.

But it was being squeezed into a wall at the Surfers Paradise SuperGP event seconds after the start of the race which persuaded the 35-year-old this year would be his last.

It was a dismal follow-up to his podium position alongside Jason Richards at last month's Bathurst 1000.

"Phillip Island, if anything, motivated me, it made me committed to have a good go at Bathurst and I suppose standing up there on the podium I thought, if anything, this is a good way to finish off.

"But once Indy came around I just didn't enjoy it, even the racing on the Saturday where I finished 18th.

"I had no brakes, the heat was unbearable and then I got stuck in the wall and I thought right, my motivation for this is waning a bit."

McConville will complete the season for Brad Jones Racing and plans to run in the two long-distance races at Phillip Island and Bathurst for the next few years.

But, with BJR unable to commit to a new contract for him for 2010, he has opted for the security of running a Jax Quickfit tyre franchise in suburban Melbourne.

McConville said that he would be leaving a sport which lacked stability and urged ruling body Avesco to help stop teams buckling under financial strain.

"Some are struggling to get budgets together.

"At the moment it's back to where it was 10 years ago where the guys who are bringing a sponsor to the table are going to get the drives over someone who's just bringing a race helmet.

"That frustrates me because I'd like to see the best drivers in there.

"You've got guys that own teams that wouldn't be there on their own merits - a couple of them have crashed into me this year and it's frustrating when you think they're only there because they've got dad's money."

McConville said Avesco needed to try to create a stable base where teams could plan for five years, not year-by year.

"I think the category as a whole needs to do more to keep the sponsors of the teams.

"It would be good to see the category appoint someone who deals directly with sponsors and tries to chase sponsors for teams," he said.
