Another Hayes horse faces pre-race check
16:24 AEST Wed Nov 4 2009

David Hayes could face another controversy over his VRC Oaks runner Livia who will be inspected by Racing Victoria veterinarians on Thursday if the leading trainer decides the filly is fit to run in the Group One Classic.

Hayes notified RVL stewards on Wednesday that Livia had a hoof problem and may not run in the $1 million feature.

The stable will decide on race morning whether the problem with the Galileo filly's off-fore hoof will prevent her from contesting Thursday's 2500m event.

"David Hayes has told us he will make a decision in the morning on Livia and, if he decides to run her, our vets will be inspecting her," chief steward Terry Bailey said.

Hayes' Melbourne Cup hopes were dashed when Livia's new stablemate, imported galloper Changingoftheguard, was inspected by three RVL vets, headed by chief vet Paul O'Callaghan, on Cup morning and was ruled to be lame and subsequently withdrawn from the race by stewards.

The horse had a foot abscess which burst 10 days before the Melbourne Cup but Hayes was adamant that the four-year-old was sound.

He was furious that Changingoftheguard was ruled unfit to run in the Cup.

"I had the horse trot in front of the TV cameras to show everyone that he was sound. I've never been so insulted in my life," he said after the race.

"The horse worked in public for 13 days straight."

Livia, a Sandown 1600m winner three starts back, is at $12 with TAB Sportsbet in the Oaks which is dominated by the Bart Cummings-trained Faint Perfume ($1.70 fav).

Last start Livia was sent out favourite over 2000m at Caulfield on October 17 when she was badly held up near the 200m before storming home to finish fifth to Run For Naara.
