Ronchi adds to misery for Blues
19:21 AEST Wed Nov 4 2009

Explosive hitter Luke Ronchi cracked 148 for Western Australia on a day when NSW struggled with rain interruptions, a greasy ball and a series of verbal battles with their own fans.

Ronchi, a former Australian Twenty20 representative, guided the Warriors to 8-499 after a rain-interrupted day two of their Sheffield Shield clash at the SCG on Wednesday.

Only 26.2 overs were bowled on day two.

But it was enough time for former Test wrist-spinner Beau Casson to deliver a few more wild full tosses in his 0-68 from 15 overs, earning some unwanted advice from the crowd of 242.

Blues captain Simon Katich felt obliged to point out to one animated fan that first-class cricket was a little harder than it looked and Test quick Stuart Clark was also engaging in an argument with a supporter.

Play finally got underway at 3.15pm with the Warriors resuming on 5-371 and as Clark (2-86) stood at his mark preparing to bowl the first ball of the day, a barracker yelled out for him to "get on with it".

"I said 'well mate we can't. The umpires want us to start at 3.15 and it's 3.14. There's no point yelling at me'," Clark said.

"You can talk to whoever you want in the crowd because there isn't that many there.

"I feel sorry for Beau because he's obviously going through some tough times.

"But he's working really hard. He doesn't need blokes yelling out stuff."

Steve Magoffin will resume on Thursday's day three on two not out with Josh Mangan on five.

On a tough day for the Blues, paceman Burt Cockley (1-106) broke through after tea when he had Theo Doropoulos caught at point for 65.

Doropoulos added 180 in 174 minutes with Ronchi.

Ashley Noffke was run out after smashing a quick 31 and Ronchi was caught at cover off Clark's bowling.

The 28-year-old Ronchi hit 27 fours in a brilliant 154-ball knock, showing he had turned the corner from a dark period last summer when the Warriors dropped him for a run drought.

Dropped on 99 at short cover by Phil Jaques, Ronchi admitted he was lucky to get his 108-ball hundred, his highest first-class score and fourth century.

"I had a poor season last year," Ronchi admitted on Wednesday.

Ronchi, who holds the Australian domestic one-day record with a 56-ball hundred against NSW three years ago, says he has regained confidence after some pre-season work on his technique with Warriors coach Tom Moody.

"I used to move around a lot at the crease before the ball was bowled, my head was moving a whole lot, so that has stopped," Ronchi said.

Ronchi said the Warriors faced a massive task to get 20 wickets and claim an outright win.

"The pitch is pretty flat. Hopefully we can get our spinners turning it and get the ball doing a little bit of reverse (swing)," he said.

Young NSW leg-spinner Steve Smith has taken 3-164, although on day two his figures were 0-49 from five overs in a brutal display from the Warriors batsmen.
