Tassie skipper blasts heartless batting

Tasmania skipper George Bailey has slammed his batsmen after their Sheffield Shield defeat by Qld.

Tasmanian skipper George Bailey has slammed his batsmen for a "lack of heart" following their demoralising Sheffield Shield thumping by Queensland.

The no-name Bulls jumped to the top of the Shield table on Wednesday morning when bustling quick Ben Cutting ripped through the Tigers tail for an innings and seven run victory at the Gabba.

Cutting, 22, finished with a career-best haul of 6-37 from 23 overs of hostile pace, and eight wickets for the match, after he took three scalps in 13 balls to dismiss the visitors for 219.

While it only took the Bulls 45 minutes to clean up the last four wickets for 10 runs on the final day, the damage was done on the opening day after Bailey controversially opted to bat first.

His inexperienced top-order failed to cope with the hooping ball under cloudy skies, plunging to 5-27, but the captain wouldn't cop any excuses.

"There was a little bit of swing on day one, nothing untoward, so it's a lack of heart really," said Bailey, who is now 0-2 as Shield captain after an opening-round capitulation to South Australia.

"It's just being prepared to battle it out.

"We're just not giving ourselves a chance in the game, we're that far behind the eight-ball it's hard to blame any other parts of the game."

Tasmania's second-innings response, after starting 226 runs in arrears, frustrated Bailey just as much as all of his top six reached double figures on a good batting wicket but none made it to 50.

"It's an awareness of the contest and when the critical moments are," he said. "It's our batsmen getting themselves out."

Cutting assured the Bulls of six points by ending a day-three Tigers fightback with two wickets in three deliveries with the second new ball before carrying on his form on Wednesday as Tasmania suffered a 6-24 collapse.

Bowling at close to his top speed of 140kph and digging in short, he had Brett Geeves, Brady Jones and Brendan Drew all caught in the slips cordon in his second, third and fourth overs of the final day.

"It (the bouncer) has always been a weapon," the former Australian U19 player said.

"I try and set wickets up with my short ball. It's a bit quicker so it surprises them a bit more.

"I've probably taken more wickets with it than any other delivery."

Bulls skipper Chris Simpson was particularly impressed by Cutting's efforts to produce his most venomous spell in the last hour of a hard day in the field on Tuesday.

"Not many blokes have that natural talent and he's certainly got it," Simpson said. "He's an enforcer and he likes bowling short balls.

"Dougy Bollinger, (Dirk) Nannes and these guys would have him for pace but batsmen talk about blokes being heavy on the bat and steep bounce and that's what he's got."
