Kisel's World Cup hopes dealt blow

Karol Kisel has been overlooked by Slovakia, leaving a dent in the Sydney player's World Cup hopes.

Sydney FC midfielder Karol Kisel's slim World Cup hopes have taken a hit after he was overlooked for Slovakia's upcoming friendlies against the United States and Chile.

Kisel, who has played 25 times for the Slovakian national team, is still hoping to be a part of his nation's first appearance at a World Cup finals in South Africa next year.

But having not been called up to the squad since 2007, the 32-year-old admits a recall is unlikely before next year's World Cup.

Slovakia coach Vladimir Weiss, who hasn't even contacted Kisel since taking over the job last year, has gone for an all-European based 23-man squad for this month's home friendlies.

"I'm glad we have a chance to face two different systems of play," Weiss said.

"I hope we'll be able to secure an opponent from Africa (for a warm-up) in the spring because we could face exactly those types of opponents in the group stage of the championship."

Slovakia squad: Jan Mucha, Lubos Kamenar, Dusan Kuciak, Martin Skrtel, Peter Pekarik, Radoslav Zabavnik, Jan Durica, Marek Cech, Kornel Salata, Martin Petras, Juraj Kucka, Marek Hamsik, Miroslav Karhan, Vladimir Weiss, Miroslav Stoch, Marek Sapara, Zdeno Strba, Kamil Kopunek, Dusan Svento, Jan Kozak, Robert Vittek, Erik Jendrisek, Jan Novak, Stanislav Sestak.
