A decade had almost passed when the 'Cups King' - trainer Bart Cummings - struck once more.
With all the attention on the foreign raiders in the 2008 Melbourne Cup, Cummings' $45 outsider Viewed shocked punters, holding on to win by a nose in a thrilling photo finish.
For Cummings, it was an astonishing 12th Melbourne Cup triumph, coming some 43 years after he first tasted success in the event with Light Fingers in 1965.
During the presentations, he cheekily said it was great to see Australians succeed in racing - and cricket – a reference to his horse edging out English stayer Bauer.
It also proved the year of the 'roughie' for global racing superpower Godolphin. The stable claimed its first Group One victory in Australia when All The Good won the Caulfield Cup.
