Saints delist Matt Maguire
17:49 AEST Thu Oct 29 2009

Key defender Matt Maguire's career with St Kilda has ended on 99 games.

The 25-year-old has been delisted after injuries ruined his final few years with the Saints and left him stranded short of the 100-game milestone.

Maguire has played just 14 senior games since badly breaking his leg late in 2006 and did not manage to earn AFL selection at all this year.

In the 2007 and 2008 seasons, he was held back by foot fractures.

He was injury-free for most of this season, but could not force his way up from the VFL.

He is expected to seek to continue his career at another club through either November's national draft or the pre-season draft in December.

Maguire's delisting follows the retirement last month of veteran Saints backman Max Hudghton, who was also unable to earn selection for the grand final loss to Geelong.

Fellow tall defender Zac Dawson has been promoted from the rookie list to the primary list for next season.

The former Hawthorn discard was a surprise selection in the senior team at the start of the season, but cemented his spot, playing 23 games including the grand final.

Luke Miles has also been upgraded from the rookie list to the primary list.

The Saints had previously delisted injury-hit youngster Jarryd Allen, Irishman Colm Begley, who has returned to his homeland, and Eljay Connors.

They also traded Xavier Clarke to Brisbane, while bringing in Andrew Lovett from Essendon and Brett Peake from Fremantle.
