Formula One again dissolved into scandal in a year some in the sport would rather forget, but Mark Webber made it one to remember for Aussie race fans.

Dumped by Renault, Nelson Piquet Jr said he had been asked to deliberately crash at the 2008 Singapore GP to help teammate Fernando Alonso to his eventual win.

Renault F1 was charged with conspiracy and team boss Flavio Briatore, along with chief engineer Pat Symonds, stepped down.

Ferrari's Felipe Massa was lucky to survive a horrific crash at the Hungarian GP, where he was hit in the head by a rear suspension spring from Rubens Barrichello's Brawn.

In his eighth season behind the wheel in F1, Mark Webber claimed two race wins, at the German and Brazilian GP.

Webber's second victory came as Brawn's Jenson Button claimed the World Championship with his fifth placing.
