Craig Lowndes and Jamie Whincup stood tall at Mount Panorama, the first drivers to claim a three-peat at the Bathurst 1000 in 24 years.

A near-flawless drive from the Triple Eight Racing duo equalled the all-time record for successive triumphs, joining Peter Brock, Jim Richards and Larry Perkins.

The win proved a huge boost for Whincup who, with a further three victories for the season, claimed his first V8 Supercar Championship.

There were a number of firsts in IndyCars in 2008. Danica Patrick became the first woman to win a race at the Japan 300, and Ryan Briscoe became the first Australian to claim victory at his home event.

Meantime, Lewis Hamilton won the Formula One World Championship by a point, overtaking Timo Glock on the final corner of the final grand prix of the season to claim the required fifth place finish.
