Aussie ice skaters in last Olympic bids
11:52 AEST Thu Sep 26 2013

Four Australian ice skaters are making last-ditch attempts to qualify for next year's Winter Olympics in Russia.

The final qualifying event for the Sochi Games starts on Thursday in Germany, with Australian figure skaters Brooklee Han and Brendan Kerry and ice dancing couple Danielle O'Brien and Greg Merriman competing.

Han, an 18-year-old based in the United States, is among 29 women vying for six available Olympic spots in the ladies' individual.

"I feel I'm a very strong contender. I missed qualifying at worlds by one spot," she said in a statement on Thursday.

Ice dancing duo O'Brien and Merriman are among 23 couples chasing five Olympic spots, with Russian and American pairs expected to take the top rankings.

"The top couple of spots are probably a given so everyone will be fighting for those third, fourth and fifth spots," O'Brien said in a statement.

"We are feeling confident but we know we have work to do to get there."

The qualifying event, in Oberstdorf, finishes on Sunday.
