Radek Stepanek continued Bernard Tomic's disappointing clay court season as he dispatched the young Australian 6-3 6-2 in the first round of the Madrid Masters.

The Czech veteran next faces second seed and defending champion Roger Federer.

Tenth seed Marin Cilic was beaten 6-7(6-8) 6-4 6-1 by Spain's world No.92 Pablo Andujar.

Gilles Simon, the 16th seed, stayed on course for a potential third round meeting with Andy Murray as he came from a set down to beat French compatriot Julien Benneteau 2-6 7-5 6-3.
