Warne shouldn't have left Stars: Hussey
20:07 AEST Mon Dec 31 2012

Melbourne Stars batsman David Hussey says he told Shane Warne not to take a Big Bash League mid-season break because the team needed him.

But Warnie being Warnie, the skipper went anyway.

Warne skipped last week's win over the Strikers in Adelaide to travel to the UK for a brief family holiday and is heading back to Australia.

"We all knew right at the start of the summer that he was going to go home and miss the game against the Strikers," Hussey said on Monday.

"I was a little bit disappointed. I thought that was one game that we need our best spinner to be playing. Adelaide Oval generally turns a little bit.

"We needed him to be playing that game.

"Turned out to be probably not a blessing in disguise, but turned out to be pivotal. He gets to freshen up a bit, have Christmas with his family and now he comes back for the back half of the year and hopefully to win a championship.

"Warnie's Warnie. He takes criticism on the chin and sort of refutes everything you want to say.

"(You) have a great debate and then he takes off and does whatever he wants.

"We desperately need him back."

The Stars play the Brisbane Heat in Brisbane on Thursday.
