Defending Tour de France champion Bradley Wiggins has been handed a podium place on the 2009 edition after Lance Armstrong's results were expunged by the sport's world governing body, the UCI, official sources told AFP.

Wiggins finished fourth on the 2009 Tour behind Armstrong, whose seven Tour victories from 1999-2005 and other results dating from 1998 have been scrubbed from the record books in light of the doping allegations against him.

Armstrong also competed in the 2010 Tour, when he finished down the peloton in 22nd position.

The International Cycling Union ruled on Friday that the Tour de France races won by Armstrong will have no winners attributed to them, and also ordered the American to repay all the prize money he has earned from racing.
