He's sailing royalty with two Olympic gold medals, seven world titles and a trophy cabinet bulging with more bling than Aladdin's cave.

But none of that helped Australia's 2012 Olympic hero Malcolm Page on Wednesday as he was refused entry to the nation's most prestigious yacht club.

Page, widely regarded as the best 470 dinghy sailor ever, said he was prevented from entering the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia (CYCA) - because he didn't have a pal to sign him in.

The 40-year-old, who won the 470 class in London and became the first Australian sailor to win two Olympic gold medals, took to Twitter to lament his bad luck.

"Was not allowed in the CYCA. Had no friends to sign me in!" he wrote.

The veteran, who is in the running for November's world sailor of the year award, almost certainly saw the funny side of the refusal.

One of his of fans definitely did - they wrote in reply to his tweet: "bahahahaha that made my day."

The CYCA, located in Sydney's upmarket Rushcutters Bay, is the headquarters of the Sydney-Hobart yacht race and widely regarded as Australia's most prestigious sailing club.

Its 2700 members can enjoy the use of two large bars with spectacular views across Sydney Harbour, excellent mooring facilities at its 213-berth marina and access to shipwright and rigging experts.

But it seems not even Australia's most successful sailor can gain entry if they don't have the right connections.

Page later praised CYCA, having apparently gained entry and attended a twilight sailing event at the club.

"Had a great twilight sail with the ASC folk. Awesome NE breeze," he tweeted.

"CYCA turned on a great evening. More people in the sport after tonight!"
