AFL club Collingwood remain unsure whether they will able to lure wingman Clinton Young from Hawthorn as Sharrod Wellingham's replacement.

Young, an unrestricted free agent, is mulling over a contract offer from the Hawks.

But the Magpies may have more cash to splash on Young, whose booming left foot has become one of the Hawks' main attacking weapons.

Collingwood football director Geoff Walsh admits the Magpies have spoken to Young's management, though his loyalty to the Hawks may be key to the 26-year-old remaining with the beaten grand finalists.

"I understand, and I don't really know, that apparently the offer they've made to recontract him is something his management is not entirely happy with," Walsh told AFL Trade Radio.

"Ten years at one club, and a successful club, and their window is still well and truly open - it's a big call to say: `I'm moving on'."

Wellingham's trade from the Magpies to West Coast in recent days and the pending departure of forward Chris Dawes - most likely to Melbourne - open the door for Young.

Delisted Port Adelaide veteran David Rodan looks certain to be thrown a lifeline by a Melbourne-based club, with Melbourne and his former team Richmond both linked with him.

The Demons also remain keen on North Melbourne's tall utility Cam Pedersen, with a deal likely some time next week.

But that may not happen until the Demons organise a suitable trade for their prime target, Collingwood's Dawes.

Dawes has nominated Melbourne as his preferred destination.
