Cox Plate contender Manighar has been ruled out of the rest of the Spring Carnival after suffering a knee injury.
Part owner Simon O'Donnell confirmed the news a short time ago, saying the triple Group One winner would have to go under the knife.
"It appears he's has a flake of bone in his knee," he said.
"Its a big blow, but that's the rough and tumble of the game."
Manighar was due to run in Saturday's Caulfield Stakes ahead of an expected Cox Plate run in two weeks.
O'Donnell said the Peter Moody trained seven year old probably wouldn't return to the track for three months.
He ran in both the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups when trained by Luca Cumani.
"We probably won't know how he recovers, until he races again," admitted O'Donnell.
"He'd been going beautifully."
