McGlynn ruled out of AFL grand final

The AFL grand final week has produced its second heartbreak story in as many days, with Sydney confirming hamstrung forward Ben McGlynn will miss Saturday's MCG clash.

McGlynn had been a mainstay of John Longmire's team prior to his hamstring setback in week one of the finals and was battling the clock to not only prove fitness, but show he is a calculated selection risk worth taking.

The 27-year-old was able to do neither, failing a sprint test on Tuesday that would have kept his hopes of playing alive.

"Since the initial disappointment after the qualifying final against the Crows, Benny has been extremely positive about his recovery," Longmire said a day after Hawk veteran Brent Guerra also ruled himself out of the grand final with a hamstring injury.

"He has been in at the club at every available opportunity and I'm positive there is nothing more he could have done to make himself available to play.

"Ben has played a big role in getting us to Saturday's match and everyone at the club is disappointed he can't play."

The ex-Hawthorn midfielder was a noted absentee when the Swans trained at the SCG in front of a bumper crowd of approximately 2,000 on Tuesday afternoon.

"He did a sprint test before training and whilst he sprinted once, when he sprinted again he had some discomfort so really he failed that test in order to train," said Swans physiotherapist Matt Cameron.

"Not being able to train today and Thursday means he is unfortunately out of this game."

It is a cruel twist of fate for McGlynn, who played only three games for Hawthorn in their 2008 premiership season and left the club after figuring more prominently in their 2009 campaign.

He was in tears after straining his hamstring in the Swans' qualifying final win over the Crows.

McGlynn's confirmed non-selection has at least saved Longmire a major headache.

The second-year coach will no longer have to contemplate who he could drop from the side that comfortably downed Collingwood in last Friday's preliminary final.

As predicted by Longmire on Monday, Ted Richards (ankle) was among a number of senior players who didn't complete the full session on Tuesday.

Richards, who looked in all sorts of trouble in the first quarter of the ANZ Stadium clash with the Magpies, looked fine on Tuesday and is expected to take on the Hawks.
