Hocking not in AFL race to coach Port

Port Adelaide caretaker coach Garry Hocking has ruled himself out of the AFL club's full-time role.

Port Adelaide caretaker Garry Hocking says he won't seek the AFL club's full-time coaching job.

Port are moving to appoint a coach by the grand final, with Rodney Eade and sacked Carlton boss Brett Ratten leading candidates.

Hocking, who coached Port for the final four games following Matthew Primus' departure, says he wants to remain at Alberton under the new coach.

"I look forward to serving whoever gets the job in whatever role they see fit for me," Hocking said in a statement on Wednesday.

Carlton's axing of Ratten has opened the field for the job as the Power hunt an experienced coach, with Brisbane assistant and former Fremantle coach Mark Harvey also touted.

Port's chief executive Keith Thomas said interviews would soon be held as Hocking, who failed to win in his four games in charge, said he needed more time before being a head coach.

"The past four weeks have confirmed my passion for coaching at this level, but I believe I will further develop under a new senior coach," said Hocking, who joined Port in a development role in 2009.
