Daley to continue Stuart's Blues legacy

It's the toughest gig in Australian sport but Laurie Daley is confident he is the man who can stop Queensland from winning an eighth consecutive State of Origin series next year.

Daley was on Tuesday appointed to a two-year deal as the successor to former Blues and Canberra teammate Ricky Stuart, who stepped down as NSW coach last month to take up a full-time coaching role with Parramatta.

The former champion five-eighth is under no illusions about the enormity of his task but says the work done by his good friend Stuart in the past two years has put NSW on the brink of something special.

"Ricky Stuart's done a fantastic job over the last couple of years in closing the gap between Queensland and NSW," Daley told Fox Sports on Tuesday.

"I just want to continue on from his legacy and leave my own legacy behind.

"I know that I can get the job done.

"I know it's going to be very difficult but I'm confident in the players that NSW have developed over the last couple of years that we're not far away."

Daley's State of Origin pedigree cannot be questioned.

A veteran of 23 games, Daley has been involved in the Blues setup as a player, captain, assistant coach and selector.

He took control of the Country Origin team in 2008, leading them to two victories and a draw in five clashes with City, while also taking charge of the Indigenous team in the annual All Stars clash for the past three seasons.

Daley acknowledges his relative inexperience at the elite coaching level - with no time in control of an NRL club - but says he is eager to lock horns with Queensland counterpart Mal Meninga, another former teammate at the Raiders.

"I'm relatively new coming into the system in terms of coaching at this level," Daley said.

"I've got some experience behind me coaching Country Origin, coaching the Indigenous team and being a part of the Origin set up for over forty camps.

"I think I know what is required. I know that Mal is a very hard worker.

"I've got to match what he does off the field and I'm confident I can do that."

Champion Maroons halfback Allan Langer praised the appointment, describing Daley as one of the fiercest and most passionate NSW players he competed against and said he was the ideal person to take over from Stuart.

"I know Laurie is still very passionate about the NSW side and he'll do a very good job," Langer told AAP.

"I'm sure they've talked about it but Laurie is his own man and he'll introduce his own ideas on Origin.

"I'm sure he's got the passion for the job and you know that great competitive spirit of his will come out in him."

Daley claimed the job ahead of fellow Blues legends Brad Fittler and Trent Barrett.

It doesn't matter which coach, if the selectors pick a crap player and the passion is not as good as the QLDs then no point. Not a fan of Daley, same B$ of origin that originally belongs too.
Give Des Hasler the gig, he couldn't do any worse then his predecessors and he's got credibility, although the heirachy at Manly might argue with that.
I don't know what more i can say,He will be a stand in coach for Ricky Stewart
Don'nt tell me anyone has fallen for Lawrie Daly coaching the Blues,he is just a stand in for Ricky Stewart ,he is'nt game to do it on he's own .
Who know's better how to beat a Queenslander than a Queenslander? The only coach suitably qualified to end Qlds reign in origin, is Wayne Bennett. Whether he wants to do it is another story , but why not ask him to see if he wants the job? Look at what he did with the Kiwis in 2008? Of course his record in the NRL is unrivalled. I know this may sound painful to NSW fans but why not try?
best news ive had all week. if you have ever listened to this dummy on fox u know nsw has NO chance. Nothing to do with cattle either, ordinary qld sides have rolled some crack nsw teams to claim the title. ten in a row here we come
I must say I was always a great fan of Ricky Stewart as a player, but not a coach. After the last two series though, I saw him as the only Blue's coach to pose a significant threat to us Queenslanders. Time will tell if Laurie Daley has the right stuff, but I dont think he has. Some of the worst coaches I have known have been brilliant players, you need more than a couple of city-countries under your belt to cut it at Origin level. Queensland 8 straight.
great choice a proven winner
this is insane the guy is flat out winning a city vs country match
You morons need to take a reality check. Stop blaming coaches and start looking at the cattle we have on the park. You all seem to forget, we have been up against the best 1, 6, 7 and 9 in the game for the past 7 years. pearce and carney cant cut it, and thats the reason we are not winning series, not the coach....If we could find a decent halves combo, we would roll the benders, and mind you, if jamie lyon had of played this year, we would of gone home with the trophy
Daley is the MAN. I've seen him play for Raiders, NSM and Kangaroos and he is a game breaker. He knows what it takes to win a game when the chips are down. He won premierships and origins. Congradulations Daley.
Hey Laurie if you lose next year? Don't worry there is always the year after... Good luck
obviously you are an ill informed dope...sticky won the premiership with the roosters in his first year.
I hope Laurie can but it will take some form of trickery and scullduggery, even with ricky's passion is not enough, but if Laurie can conjure up something before the game and during the game it may take away the confidence of those cocky queenslanders, NSW virtual play against an Australian backline in Origin. So what will succeed is something that hasn't been tried before, so Laurie get your brain's trust together and think outside the square. Good Luck and hurry up.
daley? hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah today, wawawawawawawawawawawawawawawawawawawawawawawawawaw tomorrow. cant wait to see this. im with bendman
As long as he gets the support of NSW the QLD run may just come to an end. Laurie Daley is passionate has a great footballing mind and is one of the better choices available. Good Luck Laurie and the NSW Blues. You never know they may even sort the refs by next origin and the blues may get a fair go.
so we nsw dont win for another 2 years at least that is not good
Bring Craig Bellamy back. He didnt do any worse than sticky did. The problem with Stick is that you can only go on with that fake emotion and passion stuff for so long. Id rather a coach that treats the thing as any other game and sends them out there for a win. simple, but Lozz isnt that man.
Im very happy Daley will be coach for NSW. It pretty much assures another 2 years of QLD dominance.
10 in a row to QLD.
Well good luck Laurie. If you turn turn out to be half the coach that you were a player, we should do okay. Best of luck, and please, pleaseeeee, bet the boys in dark pink, because I work with enough of them, and it would be truly good to give some back to them.
This is the most awesome news EVER!!! QLD 8 in a row coming right up!
From one loud mouth to another
Who knows lets hope, Tricky couldn't do it, but then again he's never done much roosters sharkies all failed under his guidance good luck loz lets hope

A night to remember for Cowboys
