Australia's golden kayaking quartet
TATE SMITH
Age: 30
A Gold Coast surf lifesaver, Smith was an Australian surf ski champion in 2001 before switching to kayaking the next year. He took more than a year off the sport following the Beijing Olympics before returning in 2010.
DAVID SMITH
Age: 25
From the Illawarra region, Smith (no relation) also paddled in the K4 1000 in Beijing four years ago. He vowed not to compete again in K4 after the disappointment of that campaign but finally relented in 2011.
MURRAY STEWART
Age: 26
Born in South Africa, Stewart settled in Manly as a teenager and took to surf lifesaving, becoming national champion in 2009. He beat Olympic champion Ken Wallace to K1 selection for London but failed to make the final.
JAKE CLEAR
Age: 27.
Another Gold Coaster, Clear took up kayaking in 2006 to improve his surf-ski leg of his ironman racing. The nucleus of the K4 boat came from his and Stewart's combination in the K2 in 2009.
