The Boomers have fallen just short of a remarkable Olympic Games opening match win, losing a nail-biter to Brazil by four points on Sunday.

Trailing by 13 points midway through the third quarter, Australia's men's basketball team eventually lost 75-71 despite a spirited fightback led by David Andersen and Joe Ingles which nearly secured victory.

Andersen's deadly three-point shooting and Ingles' energy in the fourth quarter brought Australia back to just two points behind inside the final 30 seconds.

Australian guard Patty Mills then almost forced a turnover from Brazil, but was unable to gather the loose ball, and instead conceded a foul for the South Americans to make the game safe from the free-throw stripe.

Mills was sensational throughout for the Boomers, top-scoring with 20 points, seven rebounds and four assists.

Ingles poured in 15 points, while Andersen had 14 points and eight rebounds.

But the team's 19 turnovers for the match proved costly in the final wash-up.

The Boomers need to qualify top four in their six-team Group B to make the quarter-finals, and still have plenty of opportunities to do so - starting with their next match against Spain on Tuesday.
