Steffensen accuses AA boss of lying
02:17 AEST Tue Jul 17 2012

John Steffensen has continued his tirade against Athletics Australia, accusing the body's chief Dallas O'Brien of lying about his selection for the Olympics.

After O'Brien reiterated on Monday that Steffensen would only run the individual 400m in London if first choice Steve Solomon was injured, the dual Commonwealth champion lashed out.

Steffensen claims O'Brien has gagged head coach Eric Hollingsworth who he says asked the Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) to go against AA's wishes and select him as a reserve.

"Dallas u can't lie no more!I have a paper trail for days!Save your self n start telling the truth!U can't hide behind bias media!" Steffensen wrote on twitter.

"I dare someone to interview me and Dallas our Ceo together!! He would nerver (sic) do cause he knows would expose the lies.

"Why you put a media gag on eric!! let him tell the truth!Dallas dnt lie to the public u were on holiday and knew nothing u told me.

"Dallas why when I asked for me u and eric and doin to conference call u refused!! I warned u this would happen!! U can't no more!!"

O'Brien said AA has been very clear with the AOC that Solomon was their only choice for the individual event.

"We didn't nominate him (Steffensen) as a reserve, the AOC did," O'Brien said.

But Steffensen called on O'Brien to let Hollingsworth give his side of the story.

"Why you put a media gag on eric!! let him tell the truth!Dallas dnt lie to the public u were on holiday and knew nothing u told me," he tweeted.

"Dallas why when I asked for me u and eric and doin to conference call u refused!! I warned u this would happen!! U can't no more!!"

Australia's Olympic team chief Nick Green rebuked Steffensen on Monday for threatening to boycott the Games and claiming he had been snubbed because of his race.

Steffensen, who was born in Perth to South African parents, withdrew his threat on Monday after he learned he had been named as a reserve for the individual 400m as well as a 4x400m relay runner.

"We have been disappointed with the comments Steffensen has made," Green told reporters at the Olympic Park on Monday.

"We know that for the 410 athletes, it's a great honour to represent this country at the Olympic Games and it's a right that you earn and respect when you get in the team.

"If an athlete is not wanting to compete in any way then we'll deal with that.

"Every athlete comes here with the notion of competing and representing their country at the highest level they can."

Although Steffensen, 29, beat Solomon in the Olympic trials in March, he has failed to run the A qualfying mark to earn automatic selection.

Solomon, 19, ran a career-best 45.52s at the world junior championships in Barcelona this week, while Steffensen's best for the year is 45.61s, set in February.

"The reason Steve was chosen by selectors was over the last month he's run two PBs, he's running a second faster than John and unfortunately John's injury at the Stawell Gift has slowed him up a bit and he hasn't quite got the form he had earlier this year," O'Brien said.
