I can handle Qld Origin pressure: Smith
By Wayne Heming
19:09 AEST Tue Jun 26 2012

An unflappable Cameron Smith says he can live with the notoriety of being captain of the Queensland side which relinquishes State of Origin's best winning streak, should NSW prevail in next week's interstate series decider at Suncorp Stadium.

The July 4 clash is arguably the most-anticipated battle between the rival states since the late Arthur Beetson and fiery halfback Tommy Raudonikis took the gloves off at Lang Park in 1980.

But Smith, who replaced legend Darren Lockyer as Maroons skipper, says he's comfortable with the responsibility and pressure of leading Queensland into Wednesday week's series-deciding sellout.

"There's going to be a time where Queensland loses a series and there's going to be a captain - there has to be a captain," Smith said.

"Whether it's me or not doesn't really bother me."

Smith will accept losing provided his players perform to their best and give everything for each other on the night.

"If we all do that and we're beaten by a better side, you can't do anything about that," he said.

"Personally, I'm not worried about what people say about me. If I'm the first captain to lose a series after Locky ... I've won one before (2008) so I'm capable of doing it.

"All I'm worried about is that I can walk off the field and look Mal in the eye and look the other boys in the eye and believe that I've done a good job for them."

Smith has no need to be worried, as he has a magnificent Origin record.

He led Queensland to a series-deciding win in Lockyer's absence in 2008.

Had an elbow injury not forced him to miss the opening game of the 2010 series, Smith would be lining up for his 28th consecutive Origin game since his debut in 2003.

He has played in five of Origin's 14 series deciders, winning the past three in a row - starting with the last game of 2006 which kick-started Queensland's remarkable streak.

Queensland face their biggest test next week with former Blues halfback Ricky Stuart piecing together an aggressive, big, mobile side which has the ability to end their Origin dynasty.

The Maroons named 20 players on Tuesday, including Billy Slater, who would be given until the end of the week by coach Mal Meninga to decide if he could play after further physio on his troublesome knee in Melbourne this week.

"Billy ran yesterday morning (Monday) and he was very upbeat about that session so we are going to give him until the end of the week to make that final decision - Saturday at the latest," Meninga said.

"At this stage, we are very hopeful, but uncertain.

"Billy is desperate to play so that's why we will give him that extra time - he deserves that respect."

Starting prop Matt Scott's role in the decider is also unclear and will be determined by how he is coping emotionally after attending his mother Diane's funeral in Ilfracombe on Wednesday.

"We just have to see where Matty is at the end of the week - there are some concerns there whether he is right to go," said Meninga.

Used to be a time way back when a team was selected without all the add ons to cover this or that, and if someone was carrying an injury they were ruled out then. Now its a game of hide and seek, from both teams. I feel Slater should not play, Inglis to FB, Tate to centres and either Bowen or Barba on the wing, probably leaning to Bowen as he has experience at SOO, and has understanding through club footy on Thurstans moves. Boyd could also make way for Barba, as he seems the soft link in the chain.
havent herd ricky stewart whinging and crying about the refs in game 2
If it was game 1 & we were in this predicament than I think Ben Barba gets a run, but being the decider I think Bowen was the right choice. Slater may play anyway so it may not matter. As for Boyd, he was good in game 1, done nothing wrong in game 2 & if you watched last night, he played a blinder. I'm not even a fan of his but he deserves his spot. I think Thursto, Cronk & Smith need to lift big time & for them to do that our forwards need to get on top from kick off, not after 20 mins!
I am happy with Queensland selectors to keep Thaiday, Slater, Hodges in the team. Keeps NSW guessing. Barba's time will come, this is the decider and we don't want to see what happened to Carney in Barba. I think he is in great form and his game is spotless but he will need one more season to be mature for origin game.
As a Dog's supporter i thank Mal for not picking Barba. Now we can go back to keeping inside a protective bubble to make sure he doesn't get hurt or sick and release for trainging and game day only HEHEEEEEEE!!!! GO DOGGIES!! UP THE BLUES!! YEEEEHAWWWWW
Queensland Selectors! i agree 100%! Why Boyd? He's a dud for his club, is scared to run the ball at anything harder than a bowl of jelly. Useless. There are far better options as far as quality QLD wingers go. He does not create opportunities unless frantically passing the ball to someone else to take the hit counts! Give Barba a go on the wing! He's a slippery sucker!
Although both players have been playing some very impressive football, I would have to go with Matty over Ben for experience. Plus Matty is a favourite of mind being a COWBOYS support. But I'm sure with Ben's talent and youth, we will soon see him shine in an Origin game very soon. QUEENSLANDER!!!....
Mitchell Pearce's comments may come back to bite him. Queensland is not afraid of NSW and they will be very happy playing in front of 50,000 roaring fans.Just keep talking it up NSW.
Disappointed that Barba did not get selected - he would have been great off the bench - but he will get his chance in future years - very strong squad - Don't name the team until game day - keep NSW guessing. Qld to win by 11 points. Selectors and Mal have done a terrific job
Both sides are full of class, Either side could win, I hope this game is as tough & fast like the first 2 games, I'm a huge fan of Petero, But a NSW supporter, So I could handle Petero getting Man of the Match & NSW Winning the game
What more does Ben Barba have to do to impress???? We need that Attacking Weapon, Speed and Agility that Barba brings, look at the Dogs game of the weekend... he is good in defence, put inglis to FB Neilsen on centre F..off daris boyd due to the fact he is useless, ok he score two tries in gaame 1 only had to catch the ball.. in attack he runs backwards and sideways cos he too scared to get hit... Barba runs at the line, breaks the line and scores trys... cmon selectors
I am a one eyed Qld supporter. However I think that neither Thaiday, Slater nor Hodges should be named in the squad. Qld may be vulnerable without them but they are vulnerable with them. Their replacements need all the time and no distractions to train up.
Like the inclusion of experienced players Bowen andNielsen. Ben Barba's time will come. GO THE MAROONS!
I am happy that Matt Bowen has been picked over Ben Barba as Bowen has been in Origin before and knows the pressure that comes with it. Further, he will pair off very well with Thurston as they have been doing very well for their club matches lately.
qld will win for the next 5 years easy
As a Blues fan, I am glad they didn't pick Barba. However, I am also stunned as to why they didn't, especially when they have picked Bowen instead. Ben Barba has arguably been the best player all season and he showed that again on Sunday against the Melbourne Storm. Sure Bowen has played Origin before, but Barba has clearly shown this season that he can handle the heat – Mal Meninga has certainly made the wrong call here.
