Kewell close to staying with Victory

Harry Kewell says he is on the verge of signing a new deal to play with Melbourne Victory in the next A-League season.

The Socceroos striker hopes to wrap up the revised contract later this month following Australia's World Cup qualifier against Japan in Brisbane on Tuesday.

"We are very close, there's just a few things," he said after Australia's 0-0 draw with Oman in Muscat.

Kewell and Victory had an option to break his three-year contract at the end of his first season.

Kewell's camp is understood to have been keen to tweak the player's incentive-based contract with his second season to be played under new coach Ange Postecoglou.

When asked if he wanted to play at the Victory next season, Kewell replied: "Of course. I enjoyed my first season there and I think there are exciting times for Melbourne Victory."

The former Leeds and Liverpool player spent just under an hour on the pitch for the national team in the boiling conditions in Oman on Friday.

"I would rather play on frozen grounds, freezing cold, than 42 degrees," he said.

"I think once we played Iraq in Dubai in extreme heat, that was worse.

"We knew what was going to happen. Maybe it's a point gained instead of two lost."
