Matthew Richardson says he wants to play on in 2010, despite being the oldest player in the league.

Richmond star Matthew Richardson says he wants to play on in the AFL in 2010, but is putting recovery ahead of contract talks for now.

Richardson underwent minor knee surgery on Thursday and will not play again this season, having also undergone surgery on his hamstring tendon in May.

The league's oldest current player at 34 said he wanted to play one more season, but admitted he needed to get fit again after a frustrating year.

"At this stage my intention's that I'd like to play," he said on Friday.

"But a lot of things can happen in the next few months.

"I've got to get over these injuries first and foremost.

"The club's (looking for) a new coach, so we've got to find out who that is first.

"I'm intending to play, mentally I'm preparing to play.

"If things change they change, but that's the option I'm taking."

Richardson said he had had "a few chats" with the club about his future, but had not been offered a new contract.

Caretaker coach Jade Rawlings said on Thursday there was no rush to re-sign Richardson, as the Tigers could sign the new coach before they re-signed their 282-game veteran.
