Sydney Rowing Club won the prestigious Wyfold Challenge Cup at the Henley Royal Regatta on Sunday.
The all-Australian crew of Kurt Spencer, Scott Woodward, Tom Quilty and Ry Kehlet beat Nottingham and Union Rowing Club in the final of the men's coxless four event by one-and-three-quarter lengths.
Woodward, making his first appearance at the famed regatta on the River Thames, said the result made a tough three-month training block worthwhile.
"It was good work ... they pushed us right to the line," he told AAP.
"We did it for the homeland, I guess you could say.
"You fly across the world to race, so you take it seriously."
The Sydneysiders led from the start of the 2,112-metre race and held off a keen challenge midway through that reduced their lead from one length to a third of a length.
But a late charge restored Sydney's advantage and then saw them extend it as they crossed the finish line ecstatic, having covered the course in seven minutes and one second.
The "Aussie, Aussie, Aussie" cheer that has become ubiquitous at sporting events the world over could be heard from the grandstand before racing began in the quaint surrounds and Woodward let out a roar of "C'mon Aussie!" after he and his compatriots claimed victory.
Melbourne Grammar School were due to meet Westminster School in the final of the Fawley Challenge Cup, a junior men's quadruple sculls race, later in the day.
The Henley Royal Regatta has been held annually on the Thames since 1839, with crews match racing down a notoriously windy course.
A total of eight Australian crews took part in preliminary racing, but the rest were knocked out before the last day of competition.
