How will Kerryn McCann be remembered?

Dual Commonwealth Games gold medalist, marathon runner Kerryn McCann, has died after losing her battle with cancer.

The 41-year-old, who won the hearts of a nation through her courage, passed away early this morning, leaving behind her husband, Greg, and three children, Josie, 4, Benton, 10 and Cooper, 1.

The champion athlete successfully fought her first health battle in 2007, after surgeons removed a 2.5cm tumour from her breast.

At the time, she was pregnant and decided to delay her 18-week course of chemotherapy until after her son was born.

"The surgeon was confident he got it all and he was right. It's fantastic news," McCann told New Idea in October 2007.

However, in September of this year, her husband said his wife was undergoing a "few problems".

It was understood she was stricken by a secondary cancer in her liver.

A spokeswoman for the Breast Cancer Network said the ultimate cause of death was determined as breast cancer after secondary cancers developed.

McCann's family has asked for privacy and requested that flowers not be sent.

Instead, they welcome donations to the Breast Cancer Network Australia or the McGrath Foundation, which was established in memory of Jane McGrath, late wife of cricket legend Glenn McGrath.

McCann often spoke of Jane McGrath and the strength she drew from her.

McCann's most recent success on the athletics track was winning gold at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne.

To the joy of the millions of Australians who watched the race, she defended her Commonwealth title by beating her Kenyan opponent by just two seconds after in an exhausting sprint to the finish.

Details of McCann's funeral arrangements are expected to be announced in the coming days.

What a loss, but no worse than that of every family who has lost their lady to breast cancer. The Mc Canns are fortunate that they had national film coverage to record their wonderful Kerryn, most families are not so lucky. A beautiful, natural and talented tenacious lady, vale Kerryn, but your team of four will make it.
I am totally shocked to learn of Kerryn's death, especially as I didn't even know she had been ill. I remember her 2006 Commonwealth Games victory so well, and in fact I was only thinking about it the other day. It was the performance of a great athlete and a true sportswoman. I send my deepest condolences from the Isle of Man to all her family and friends. David Griffiths
We all have great moments in sport etched in our memories - for me the sight of Kerryn doing her lap of honour with her son, Benton, is right up there. Not the winning the race, but being able to share the experience with your son - how cool was that? I only hope that in 40 years from now, we'll be seeing that film clip celebrating Australian Athletics history, as we do with Herb Elliot etc clips today.

Yet another brave young woman taken. My heart is with her husband and kids and the family. Like most we ran the race at the M.C.G. with her. We were with her all the way. Her true Aussie spirit was on show for the world to see. So brave was she right to the end. She will always be remembered for her courage. One brave young woman my thoughts will be with the family. She will live on through her kids.Rest in peace kerryn you did yourself proud strong to the end... Lubbie
a STAR named Kerryn shines down in her family at this time and always. She was a fighter and gives inspiration to all. I am going through breast cancer treatment at the moment..two weeks out of surgery and have much older family..two boys 23 and 19 and no partner so I am inspired by her courage and support of others like Raylene Boyle to keep me in a positive frame. To Greg and the children go through each day knowing Kerryn is with you and that you have the strength to carry on. To her boy ..carry on running and live mum's dream
To Greg and your children and family and friends, I'm so sorry for your great loss of Kerryn. As a runner, she is such an inspiration to so many people. I too was in the MCG at the Games and will never ever forget the roar of the people willing Kerryn to win that marathon. I was so moved by her courageous win and I'm so grateful to have been apart of that. May God gently heal your broken hearts.
I will never forget listening to David Morrow on ABC radio calling Kerryn's win in the 2006 games. Goose bumps!!! I feel so much for the family left behind.
To the McCann family. I feel so sad and sorry for the loss of your beautiful wife and mother. I lost my wife from breast cancer 7 years ago at 42 years of age, and remember her courage in facing it. I know there will be a lot of people, myself included, who will think of Kerryn often, and remember her as a courageous and selfless wife, mother and athlete. What a champion.
