Millionaire Ronaldo backs Blatter 'slave' outburst

Have your say on football's 'modern-day slave'.

Cristiano Ronaldo believes FIFA president Sepp Blatter was right to controversially describe him as being treated like a "modern-day slave" by current club Manchester United.

Ronaldo was responding to Blatter's comments made earlier in the day, in which the head of world football insisted the player should be allowed to join Spanish giants Real Madrid if he wants to.

"I completely agree with the FIFA president," said the player currently resting in Portugal after undergoing an ankle operation.

He added: "The president is correct, but I do not want to say more."

Real Madrid are believed to be prepared to offer around 85 million euros for the 23-year-old and pay him nine million euros on a five-year deal.

Ronaldo, a boyhood Real fan, has consistently been linked with a move to the Spanish capital since the end of last season after scoring an impressive 42 goals last term as United won both the Premier League and Champions League.

"There is no agreement with Real Madrid and I still don't know where I will be playing next season," Ronaldo said on Thursday, adding that he will be out for "10 to 12 weeks" to recover from his operation.

Wading into the protracted wrangle over the player's future, Blatter said that the current practice of tying players to long contracts amounts to "modern slavery".

And he urged Manchester United and Real Madrid "to sit together" if Ronaldo wants a move to the Spanish club.

"The important thing is we should also protect the player," Blatter told Sky News.

"If the player wants to play somewhere else, then a solution should be found because if he stays in a club where he does not feel comfortable to play then it's not good for the player and for the club.

"I'm always in favour of protecting the player and if the player, he wants to leave, let him leave."

Blatter believes the issue raises questions about the way transfers and contracts are dealt with in the game.

"I think in football there's too much modern slavery in transferring players or buying players here and there, and putting them somewhere," he continued.

"We are trying now to intervene in such cases. The reaction to the Bosman law is to make long-lasting contacts in order to keep the players and then if he wants to leave, then there is only one solution, he has to pay his contract."

United issued a swift rebuke to Blatter's outburst, insisting that all their players were happy to sign contracts with the club and knew the consequences of entering into such an agreement.

A United spokesperson said: "All our players - like at other clubs - enter into their contracts after an open and free negotiation.

"Most of whom do after taking advice from a FIFA-registered agent.

"Many do so on a number of occasions and enjoy long and successful stays at Old Trafford."

UEFA's communications director William Gaillard, who serves as special advisor to European football governing body president Michel Platini, was also unimpressed by Blatter's outburst.

"It would be useful to remind people that slaves in all of the slavery systems never earned a wage," said Gaillard.

In contrast, Gaillard fears the Bosman ruling, which allows for free transfers at the end of contracts, has given players the upper hand and contributed to spiralling wages.

"It seems that both clubs and players are trying to negotiate an exit before the player is free," Gaillard said.

"It is a consequence of the Bosman ruling - there is nothing we can do about that.

"It is obvious that today players have a lot more power than they did 20 years ago, undoubtedly, and agents have a lot more power than they did 20 years ago.

"It is true that salaries are spiralling out of control. Many clubs have pointed that out."

Is Manchester United treating Christiano Ronaldo as their slave?
Should Ronaldo be released?

I say let him go, let real end his career and end up in the us league like another man utd superstar did. What an idiot he wouldn't know what a slave was if it bit him in the ***. As for Blatter, how much do real pay you a year? all i can say is what happened to zidane? becks? owen? and for that matter Ronaldo? omg! Use your brain idiot!
To a "slave" is denied the right of a free decision. Was Ronaldo "free" in signing a contract which made him super rich? In my opinion, Blatter has been quite foolish. I hope that he did not mean that "deals are just pieces of paper", as Hitler said some years ago!
If ronaldo wants to chase more money Man U should let him but his way out of his contract and drop him at the airport. 1 player doesnt make a team but 1 player can destroy a team. he is only going to bring Man U down if they make him stay. and the way he has carried on who would want him in their team he cant even uphold his contract 1 season after signin it. he has no heart. needs to take a page out of scholes book and stop lookin for hand outs. he has great talent but it is a shame until he gets his attitude fixed he will never be remembered as a great player after he retires. the spanish league will not fix that. Real only care about their trophy cabinet and if he hadnt netted over 40 goals they wouldnt be knockin his door down. Sir Alex kick a boot at Ronaldo and show him the door
Man U should sell or loan him to watford for a year give him a wake up call and while man u is in champions league poor ronaldo will be playing d grade football. What sort of slave is paid millions a year???
Considering the money the prima donna makes he should buy himself out of his contract and go to Real Madrid. In legal terms he has signed a contract and has to honour it. He wasn't unhappy when he signed the extended contract with United last year. It's uncanny how more money can change your state of mind, from happy to unhappy. I would stick him in the lower divisions so that he can see how slaves on less money cope.
first, i think Blatter need to stop smoking the carpet and do something else, modern slavery Please can i be one with this amount of money and fullfilling your kid dream, someone like him need to think before he opens his mouth. Ronaldo ,well thank you for what you did for Man U,but thanks Man u for what they did for you, greed is a big part of our society
Blatter has, by making his statement about 'so called slavery under long term contracts' and relating this to Ronaldo, has made it quite obvious that he has a cinflict of interest bewteen his role as FIFA President and a long term supporter of Real Madrid. No longer can any association, club or player depend on his or FIFA's neutral role as a fair arbitrator and administrator of Soccer as long as Blatter stays at the top. It is time he stood down and let someone else take his job over. I pity Man,Utd's chances of getting a fair hearing of their case curerntly with FIFA which seems to have been forgotten. Real Madrid and the press supported by Blatter are the real ones at fault and causing Ronaldino and Man. Utd. so much worry.
I would love to see what Sepp Blatters reaction would be if someone tried to break a contract they had signed with FIFA. If the shoe was on the other foot this ignorant old fart would be the first to demand that the contract be honoured, regardless....Roanldo signed on the line, he knew he was in it for the long term. Although he would be great in a team that has more ego than talent (Madrid)...Man U should make him play lower division football for the next 4 years, never playing in the Premier League again. Might make this whinging baby realise how lucky he was to be blessed with ability to do what he does. Somebody needs to tell him that just because he can kick a ball really well doesn't give him the right to think he just do whatever he wants. Man Utd were great before Roanldo and will continue to be great long after he has left....If Ronaldo really really wanted to go, he should be made to pay the club the worth of his contract, plus a massive penalty for breaking the contract.
Clubs pay enormous amounts of money to these "slaves" and are willing to pay it for the entire contract, but the "slaves" are only willing to accept these payments if no-one offers more. Is Ronaldo going to sign a contract at Real and then renege part-way through if Chelsea or any other club offers more still?
What is the point of a contract then Blatter?? Correct me if I am wrong but if a player has a problem with a long standing contract then why do THEY sign such contracts. No one was holding Ronoldo's hand when he signed the muli million dollar contract so it is hardly slavery. Next thing you will be saying it's child slavery to have teenagers playing professional football. This level of thinking is quite scarey coming from the FIFA president!
I think it's disgusting how you can compare a multi millionaire to a "slave"...its pathetic and sad, get a life. Maybe you should travel to Africa and Asia and see what a slave really is, it's completely insensitive of Blatter. Thats why I watch Rugby, Soccer players whine too much about how hard life is...I want out of my million pound contract so I can get even more. Go dive in search for a penalty. Idiots.
Dave from melbourne could not be more right!!!!! Its not his fault he is paid 100 000 pounds a week! Im sure if all you people were an absolute gun at a certain sport and they offered it to you, you would not knock it back!!! stop taking the moral high ground and grow uP!!!!!
It appears to me that Cristiano Ronaldo and Real Madrid are a very greedy lot. Firstly Ronaldo willingly signed a 5 Year Deal with Manchester United and he should honor his side of the deal. Man Utd should not be bullied by Blatter and Real to release the player. Ronaldo would not be the player that he is if not for Man Utd. Ronaldo should honor his contract because he has a moral obligation to do so. Secondly Real Madrid. What can be said of this club? Bullies!!! This is a club that is far too GREEDY!. This is a club that sacks a coach for winning the LIGA (Fabio Capello). How laugable!! And now it wants Ronaldo. I suggest to this club to concentrate on developing their own players and make a bid for Ronaldo when his contract expires at Man Utd. Sepp Blatter should not make comments . A contract is a contract! Sepp should know better!
Oh my god a player scored a lot of goals for his club how dare the *** want him to fulfil his signed and agreed contract!!! That must be the same as slavery after all who doesnt know a slave paid millions of pounds a week to play football. How dare ManU even attempt to hold a player to their lawfully agreed and signed contract!!!! Where will the world end, people actually behaving like humans rather than money obsessed animals heaven forbid. Ronaldoh is a total *** and furgisun should keep him till the contract expires but never play the *** cry baby for the rest of the term, well thats what i'd do anyway then maybe he'd learn he's not that *** good finally!!!!!!!!!!!
Fair enough, he is no slave, but they work more than 2 hours a week you idiot!!! Yes, he should not whinge about his life (which im not sure that he is) but they do sell there lives to football when they sign the line so they earn every cent they get.
i think a 'slave' is a bit exaggerated but yes ronaldo should b able 2 move 2 real madrid. man u only want ronaldo because of the extra sponsorship deals they get, more fans=higher profits. man u just want him because of the many goals he scored last season but the player's actually not truly happy there. mind you, he doesn't receive a bad pay packet at man united!!
Its very bad to been a modern slave, you get to drive the best cars in the world, hot chicks, live in the monaco,GET 130000 Pound NOT dollars, dad mum when i grow up I want to be a slave........
Ronaldo signed a 5 year contract 12 months ago. Man U reaches the pinnacle this yar by winning the Champions League, so he thinks he has reached th highest level possible with the Red Devils. So, time to move on. But, hang on, he signed a 5 year contract. Real Madrid have obviously been in his ear too, but why would u want to go to an inferior club - even if he supported them as a boy? I hope Sir Alex
Let Him GO........... UNITED aren't Great because of Ronaldo. Ronaldo became great because of UNITED. When he goes to Real MUD we won't hear of him as often.
Sepp Blatter is a fool who should keep his opinions to himself. Ronaldo has a contract and should honor it and if he doesn't then don't play. As for being a slave wish I could get paid his slave wages.
NO Ronaldo is being treated very well and if he moves to real madrid their going to do CRAP because real madrid has nobody there so why should he move frome MAN U they have the best players from around the world. If he goes I'll have to follow Real madrid and Man U.
I think he has every right to feel like a slave. He is a slave in football terms, not in literal terms people. They use him as a player to save the team from embarrassment. There is a lot of pressure he is dealing with. The last match he played for Portugal against Germany in the World Cup was dreadful. That was no Real Madrid player i can tell you that. But if everybody is hyping him up and saying that he is such a talent, and one of the best and bla bla bla, then he is going to feel obliged to speak his mind and get what he wants. I don't think this is a money issue here. I think it is a matter of football players acting like divas. And lets face it, it's because of all the attention they get.
you missed spelt millionaire doesnt it start with a B?
Having recently been to the Phillipines and seen families of 8 living in tin shanty's the size of the average bedroom ... shanty's that are located beside the cities rubbish dump ... with no fresh water ... no sewage system .... nothing !!! and having seen the children in this SLUM sorting through rubbish to find recyclables to sell in order to provide food for their families ... I think that the modern day football player seriously needs to get some perspective on life !!! SERIOUSLY !!! The issue is not whether the modern day player is being treated unfairly ... "treated like a slave" ... but more that they have been treated like Kings for far too long ... too compare themselves to slaves is ridiculous and makes me sick in the guts !!!
isn't this rich. right now in australia the high court has been asked to define what slavery actually means in the 21st century. clearly this is not the scenario that has been tabled as some sort of template to work with. it does, however, speak volumes about the current state of world football. specifically, it speaks volumes about the problems therein. none of them have to do with slavery, except in so much as players, clubs and everyone else associated with top tier football have become slaves to the accumulation of wealth. i echo the response of other commentators on this forum that an apology to all those who have had to live subjected to slavery is in order. what a sad indictment of our times to even be discussing this as a matter of interest. many should be outraged by ronaldo, for his greed and selfishness and utter stupidity. even more outrageous is the president, who clearly, it seems, appears to be acting covertly for madrid.even as a merseysider im outraged, and i hate em.
Ro ********* naldo , u dum ...... U earn more than me $1,500 and u still winge. U r a great player without doubt. But remember when we ( Greece ) played u in 2004? Who won? twice? Who was the one that was diving throughout the final? Who was the one crying after the Greeks lifted the trophy? If u r such a great and highly earning player then y the need to dive? I'll tell u somehting come change clutches and oil all day and get paid virtually nothing then we will see who will cry dumb s.....t
good grief listen to you all no simpathy while he may be getting paid alot imagine YOU signed up to a job for what your worth then after a year working there you realise YOU are worth more and you dont like the place you are working well by all your standards you should shut up and stay for another FOUR years. Put things into perspective no-one would stay at a workplace that they where unhappy at why should he. Also not once has he complained about his pay everyone just assumes he wants to move for money I know I would like to play for the team I support and I know I wouldn't stay at a workplace if i didn't like it.
Ronaldo is a good player. He ahs made a comment which includes no whinging or whining and does not disrespect anyone. It's a one liner. If you want to complain about anyone its Blatter you should be all complaining about. Sure he signed a contract, fair enough but most of us sign contracts and work and still will leave when we want to. He isnt being ungrateful just making a general comment that we all assume means something else. Leave it to him and the clubs.
hello all... Blatter is an idiot for starters! What has he got to gain by saying what he said? I am surprised that the Club and Sir Alex hasnt made a bold statement yet! I wont be surprised if the club itself, doesnt sue Blatter for defamation! Im sure there will be more following....watch this space! sydfan has spoken...
Let's give him 'real' world wages... he works maybe 2 hours a week (probably less), and still whinges that he is treated as a slave. If he were a slave as he so believes, would we see him score 42 goals, or would he still be out ploughing in the paddock! I'd sell my services for that amount each year, and, at a guess, I'd be doing more strenuous work than kicking a ball around!
